Dan Tepfer is a phenomenon. It takes more than a phenomenal brain and phenomenal control of keyboard technique to play Bach’s attempt to relieve Count Kaiserling’s insomnia over 30 variations. Glenn Gould had it, Angela Hewitt has it and Dan Tepfer has all of it, and more: a degree in astrophysics, a plethora of awards as pianist and composer, duo partner of jazz legend Lee Konitz and all-round genius. Dan plays the work and improvises an additional statement after each of the 30 variations, seamlessly working it into the overall architecture of the piece. Well worth losing a night’s sleep over.
