Prelude and Fugue

  • Fitters' Workshop 11 Wentworth Avenue Kingston, ACT, 2604 Australia (map)

Concert 18

Following on from his collaboration in the Opening Gala with Bach Akadamie Australia and music by Bach’s contemporaries in Bach’s Orbit and, most importantly, directing the St John Passion from the keyboard, it is only fitting that we should hear another side of Belgian harpsichordist Korneel Bernolet’s artistry in a solo recital, as he takes us into the heart and soul of Bach’s world, and the harpsichord at its centre. He has designed a delicious selection of music for the occasion, including Preludes and Fugues from both the first and second books of the Well-Tempered Clavier, alongside other works by Bach and his precursors Allessandro Scarlatti, François Couperin and Georg Böhm.

It is also worth noting that this will be an opportunity to hear a fine instrument. We thank Professor Neal Peres da Costa for generously making his own instrument – a French double manual harpsichord after Jean Goujon (early 18th century), made by Andrew Garlick in Somerset, UK – available for the performance.

Program change note: It is with great regret that we announce the withdrawal of the Taiwanese marimba player Chin Cheng Lin from this year’s festival. Chin Cheng has recently received medical advice that he not perform or fly for at least three months, which unfortunately puts the herculean task of performing Bach’s preludes and fugues on the marimba out of the question. We will miss him, and wish him well for a steady recovery.
